Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin treatment procedure that uses tiny crystals to exfoliate the skin. And correct dull skin, aging, and removing acne scars. It is common for patients to ask what will happen to their skin after microdermabrasion treatment. This helps the patient to be psychologically prepared for the change they will experience. Microdermabrasion works by removing the outermost layer of the skin as a way of creating room for new skin. As a result, it is common for patients to experience some peeling after microdermabrasion treatment.

After the microdermabrasion skincare treatment, the skin will not start peeling immediately for at least 48 hours. Within the first two days after skin treatment, the skin will feel tighter and pink in color.

However, after two days, you will start seeing your skin peel off, which usually resembles sunburn. The duration that the peeling takes depends on the type of skin that you have. Patients who experience light peels have their skin peeling for about three days, whereas those with deeper peels have up to 5 days of peeling.

What to do after Peeling ?

Skin peeling is common after microdermabrasion treatment. The good news is that there are specific steps that you can take to ensure that your skin is in good condition and that you are comfortable with the process.

  • After a microdermabrasion treatment, you can gently treat the skin over the next few weeks. It is advisable that you maintain a skincare routine that primarily focuses on cleansing, toning, and moisturizing the skin.
  • Avoid activities that cause sweating, such as workouts, for at least 24 hours. Sweating after a microdermabrasion procedure is likely to cause irritation to the treated area.
  • Reduce the amount you spend directly in the sun for about a week, and apply sunscreen generously to reduce the peeling effect and prevent a stinging sensation.
  • Do not use active ingredients such as topicals, benzoyl peroxide, retinol, and vitamin C for at least one week.

Once microdermabrasion treatment has been performed on the skin, the new skin tends to be sensitive and appear red or pink. After about a few days to a week, the swelling on the treated area will begin to decrease, but in some cases, it can last for weeks to about a month. Also, you will notice that your skin starts to become normal after about three months after microdermabrasion treatment. The skin will look and feel smoother once the treated area begins to heal.
